Hopefully someone will do some comparison tests to see if the performance hits have any major impact in the real world.
It looks like there are ways around this (forcing the drive to use 512 byte allocation), the scaremongering in the press seems like a windows 7 PR campaign!

PS: It seems strange that XP didn't implement this, i suppose it's a handy way to force people to upgrade.

As far as I am aware, this only applies to primary partitions. If you have extended partitions then I don't think that these suffer from the alignment problem.

This means that if you are simply adding a new drive to your system then you just have to put all the partitions on the new drive in an extended partition and you are good to go.

The probelm arises when you are replacing the main system drive. There are some tools available to correct this, such as the Western Digital align utility [link]

I ran this after I installed a new disk on my XP PVR system and it reported that everything in the extended partition was aligned OK and that it had nothing to do.

A quick Google will probably throw up software from othe manufacturers.

I guess that XP will run just fine for a while yet.
Totally escaped me this one; manufacturers are changing the way hard drives will be formatted and older OS may have problems with this including WinXP.

[link]

No idea if this is possible; could Microsoft provide an update to XP that allows it to handle these new hard drives with no problems?

Of course even if it is possible they may not; it would get a lot of folk to upgrade to a new OS.
Does this still happen if you run DigiTV as a non-admin user? I may be wrong, but suspect only admins can set power options.

You czn modify the permissions on the relevant registry keys to allow tuning etc. to work too.
I get this exact same problem on Win 7 64 bit and it is definitely Digitv that is doing it. I can't find a way to change the Digitv power scheme settings - not accessible under Win 7 power management or Digitv settings. Complete pain in the ^&*^!

Hi

I've finally discovered after lots of hunting that DigiTV is the culprit that keeps resetting Windows Power Options (Windows 7/64). My plan gets reset to:
Turn off the display: 20min
Put computer to Sleep: Never

It seems to happen when I close the viewing window i.e. the tasktray app is still running.
My customised power options are only sticky when I shutdown DigiTV completely.
Any ideas why this is happening or how to solve it? It's a real PITA.

If anyone tries to run my code they may find two problems:

a.    there are 3 columns of numbers - these were for testing  how many characters before the first Pack Header, then from description to EoF and last Pack Header to EoF;

b. I thought the File Creation Date was preserved and the Date Modified was changed on copies of the file -WRONG! (I blame the pressures of drinking and coding at the same time). What is actually required is the Date Modified minus duration to reveal the start time and date.

Neither problem detracts from the ability to see duplicate recordings and copies of recordings.

I've altered the code but won't bother posting it unless anyone wants to run the code in anger, in which case I'll e-mail the new code to anyone who wants it.
Thanks Mike C, just given it a go and it's fixed the problem, extremely quickly - maybe too quickly as if I could make a small criticism there is no visual confirmation that the process has been completed other than looking at the file properties themselves or seeing no activity in task manager, or I'd guess in trying to open a new directory and finding the dialog blocked.
I decided to have a another go at my program, and appear to have got it to work.

I have just run it on my recordings folder & it has fixed some I had which were wrong.
The program simply copies the Modified Date to the Create Date of all*.mpg files.

I have put it onto rapidshare here: [removed - see next post]

Un-zip and run the program. Browse to your Recordings folder and then Go.

DigiTV needs to be re-started to pick up the revised dates.

Pls enjoy at your own risk

Now, when looking at the recordings list (main menu-pvr-tv recordings) the last few that were directly recorded on this drive are in chronological order, the ones moved from the previous drive are in reverse alpha order.

The file dates as viewed in windows explorer are correct, and a sort on date gives me the order I would have expected - but explorer is looking at the modified field - I'm using NTFS.

DigiTV seems to be picking up the file created date rather than the modified date, which is the date the file was copied over.

Is there any way to fix this?

Hi M100,

This happened to me when building my New PVR.

Fortunately I still had the original files, I had been copying the files rather than Cutting and Pasting them.

If you cut and paste them the date meta data remains the same. I've often cut and pasted (moved) groups of files to new folders. This works correctly, but is a bit risky if something happens part way through the move process.

I went back to my original files and copied them using the following Microsoft utility (RICHCOPY):

[link]

What ever you do make sure RICHCOPY only copies one file at one, otherwise your files become horribly fragmented and the process is very slow (the copy threads needs to be set to 1)

Unfortunately either of these methods will only work if you have access to the original files.

This may not help you now but may help others who a considering moving files.

Richard,

Who has both a copy command and a text format named after him!

Thanks, I'll have a look for a suitable utility.

Thinking about it since I might have come up with a no frills solution at least to the order if not the date.

I have over 500 files to modify, I strongly suspect a sort on date and then a copy past to the new drive would have kept them in the right order but explorer took them in alpha order (or maybe in reverse alpha)

so my solution (untested) is sort on modified date in explorer

select contiguous batches of say 50 files from the oldest to the newest

copy paste them back to the existing directory

once completed, delete the original files

rename the copies (File Renamer basic does this fine) to remove the "Copy of " from the file.

repeat for the other batches until finished.
Last time I had this, I found a program on the internet to manually fix each file by setting the Create date (bit of a pain really). Sorry, can't remember the name of it, but hopefully Google should be your friend.

I did try to write a Delphi program to simply process and fix all files in a directory, but could only find example code to change the modified date

Bill wrote:

There's a hardware incompatibility that makes the PCI tuner almost impossible to interface with the Windows 64 bit platform.

Given that PCI ports are becoming rare on new motherboards, it should be no surprise that the PCI tuner will become obsolete eventually. (which is a PITA for me too)

It's a sad inevitable fact that hardware becomes obsolete and support dies for it. My comments at the lack of support for x64 internal hardware were not just aimed at the dropping of support for the pci card but also lamenting the lack of a internal solution to act as a replacement for the PCI card.
Having said that, given that the PCI card is still being sold as a current product, I would have expected current and continuing support for it.

as for the software issue.. With DigiTV V4.5 (V4 was never released) apparently just round the corner I'm hardly going to buy V3.7 licences now given that there is no commitment to allow new purchasers to upgrade to V4.5

and as for the Beta issue, should it ever arrive... I would hope that the beta allows full use of BDA. Again I'm hardly going to pay for a licence to test buggy beta software which I may not like or which may never be finished..
